Can you play online with a jailbroken PS4?

Peut-on jouer en ligne avec une PS4 jailbreakée

The software unlocking of a PlayStation 4 allows some users to access features not authorized by Sony, but it raises a central question: can one continue to play online on a jailbroken console without being blocked by security systems? In 2025, the answer is far from reassuring for those hoping to enjoy both the freedom offered by the jailbreak and the online services of the PlayStation Network.

Connection to the PSN: access immediately compromised

As soon as a PS4 console is modified, its access to the PlayStation Network (PSN) becomes extremely precarious. Sony closely monitors the security systems embedded in its consoles and implements automatic detection of unofficial or modified firmware. Generally, as soon as a jailbroken PS4 attempts to connect to the Internet to use network services, it is detected, then temporarily or permanently excluded.

Contrary to some misconceptions, using a custom DNS or blocking updates is no longer enough to conceal the console’s status. Sony has strengthened its telemetry systems: each request sent from a console transmits information about the system version, active modules, open applications, or even modified files. As soon as a discrepancy is detected, a security alert is triggered, which generally results in an irreversible ban.

Console ban and user account suspension

When the PSN detects a jailbroken console, the consequences are not limited to a simple connection error. Sony generally proceeds with a double block:

  • On one hand, the console’s hardware identifier (console ID) is permanently blacklisted, preventing any future connection attempts, even after system restoration.
  • On the other hand, the PSN account used on this machine is suspended, with a ban on reusing it on another console, even a legitimate one.

In other words, it becomes impossible to access multiplayer mode, digital purchases, game updates, or cloud saves, and this is irrevocable. Sony applies a zero-tolerance policy here.

Alternative services: are private servers a viable solution?

Faced with this impossibility of playing online through official channels, some users of unlocked consoles try to circumvent the problem with private servers. These third-party services offer to simulate the PSN environment to allow multiplayer games on certain compatible titles.

In reality, these solutions have several limitations:

  • They only work for a handful of titles, often old or already abandoned by official servers.
  • The level of security is low, with risks of data interception, malware, or identity theft.
  • The service’s stability is very variable: frequent disconnections, high latency, and incompatibilities are common.

In other words, private servers can temporarily help for some specific uses, but they do not replace Sony’s official network nor do they allow for a comparable online gaming experience.

Using two consoles: one for the jailbreak, another for the PSN

A strategy sometimes adopted by some experienced players is to dedicate one console to the jailbreak and keep another machine, intact, for online play. This separation allows benefiting from the advantages of both worlds, provided that the jailbroken console is never connected to the PSN, nor the same account used on both systems.

But this solution requires additional investment and rigorous management of files and saves. It is therefore not accessible to all user profiles.
