Error CE-108255-1 on PS5: what does it mean and how to fix it?

Erreur CE-108255-1 sur PS5 : que signifie-t-elle et comment la corriger ?

The appearance of the code CE-108255-1 on a PS5 console can quickly cause concern. This error message usually occurs when the launch of a game or application fails abruptly. But should it be seen as a simple software bug or a more serious problem?

What is the cause of the CE-108255-1 error on PS5?

This error code indicates that the console failed to properly execute a program. The targeted application may crash at startup or during use, leading to a return to the home screen. The message is often accompanied by this mention: “An error occurred in the following application.”

According to user feedback and technical observations, this error may be related to:

– a corrupted system file,
– a poorly installed or partially downloaded game,
– a failing firmware of the console,
– or, more rarely, a hardware defect.

Classic restart or reinstallation of the game

In many cases, a simple restart of the PS5 is enough to eliminate the problem. But if the code consistently returns on the same game or application, it is recommended to:

– Delete the concerned game from the PS5 interface,
– Re-download the entire file via the PlayStation Store or from the disc.

This eliminates any trace of damaged files causing the crash.

Mandatory system update

Sony has fixed several system bugs through its successive updates. It is therefore essential to ensure that the console is up to date, by going to:
Settings > System > System Software > Update and Update Settings.

A non-updated system may poorly handle certain recent games, especially if they rely on features recently added via firmware.

Restore the database in safe mode

If the error persists despite reinstalling the game, it is advisable to use the database rebuild tool available from safe mode:

1. Completely turn off the PS5.
2. Hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds).
3. Connect the controller via USB.
4. Select the “Rebuild Database” option.

This operation does not erase any data but reorganizes the system files. It often corrects reading or launching anomalies.

Complete reset if no other method works

When all attempts fail, a complete reset of the console can be considered. It is possible to do this without losing installed games by choosing “Reset PS5 (keep games and applications).” But in some cases, a total formatting may be necessary.

Important: before any reset, it is strongly recommended to back up saves on an external drive or via the cloud (if the PS Plus subscription is active), to avoid any loss of progress.

Hardware defect: a risk not to be ruled out

Even though it remains rare, the CE-108255-1 error may be linked to a hardware problem on the motherboard or internal SSD. If the console displays this message even after a complete reset, or on several different games, it may be wise to:

– contact Sony support via their online support,
– invoke the manufacturer’s warranty if the PS5 is less than two years old.

Many users have obtained a standard exchange or free repair in this type of situation.
