Sometimes the virtual keyboard no longer appears when you touch a text field on your Android smartphone or tablet. This problem can have several origins: a temporary bug, a misconfiguration, a faulty third-party application, or an incomplete system update.
Before panicking, you need to understand that this anomaly is generally easy to fix. The disappearance of the keyboard may be related to:
- the accidental deactivation of the default keyboard,
- a temporary crash of the keyboard application,
- a conflict with another application,
- or an Android system update that reset certain settings.
First step: restart your Android device
The simplest method to fix a keyboard malfunction is often a complete restart of the device. By restarting, Android reloads all system services, including the one that manages the display of the virtual keyboard.
A restart may be enough to make the keyboard reappear if it had simply stopped working or had frozen in the background.
Check if a keyboard is enabled in the settings
It is possible that the default keyboard was accidentally disabled. Here’s how to check:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on System (or “General Management” depending on the brand).
- Select Language and input.
- Open Virtual keyboard.
- Ensure that Gboard, SwiftKey, or any other keyboard you use is enabled.
If no keyboard is displayed, tap on Manage keyboards and enable the desired keyboard. You can also click on Configure keyboards to add one manually if necessary.
Test in another application to isolate the problem
Sometimes, the keyboard disappears only in a particular application due to a bug or incompatibility. Try typing in another application (like Messages, Notes, or the web browser) to see if the keyboard appears.
If the keyboard works elsewhere, the problem likely comes from the initial application. An update of this application or clearing its cache could resolve the issue.
Force stop the keyboard and clear its cache
It may be useful to force stop the keyboard and clear its temporary files to resolve internal errors:
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Search for the name of your keyboard (e.g., Gboard).
- Tap on Force stop.
- Then go to Storage > Clear cache.
Then restart the phone and check if the keyboard reappears when you touch an input field.
Reinstall or change the keyboard
If the problem persists, you can try to uninstall updates of your keyboard, or uninstall it completely if it’s a third-party application. You can then:
- Reinstall the keyboard via the Google Play Store (Gboard, SwiftKey, etc.)
- Test another keyboard temporarily to confirm that it is not a global bug.
Here are some reliable alternatives:
- Gboard (by Google): stable, customizable, and lightweight.
- Microsoft SwiftKey: very good at prediction and gesture typing.
- Grammarly Keyboard: useful if you write often.
Manually activate the keyboard if nothing appears
In some cases, Android may temporarily disable all keyboards. To force activation:
- Go to Settings > Language and input.
- Tap on Current keyboard, then select Choose a keyboard.
- Manually activate the desired keyboard.
This manipulation can immediately restart the appearance of the keyboard during typing.
As a last resort: reset Android settings
If all previous methods fail, it may be a deep system bug. Before proceeding with a complete reset of the device (which erases all data), you can first reset only the system settings:
Settings > System > Reset options > Reset settings (network, apps, language…)
This allows you to fix errors without erasing your personal files.
