Playing PS4 without using a controller: is it possible?

Jouer à la PS4 sans utiliser de manette est-ce possible

The PlayStation 4 is designed to be used with its DualShock 4 controller, but some players wonder if it’s possible to play differently. Whether for accessibility, comfort, or simply to try new ways of playing, several solutions exist to interact with the console without using the traditional controller.

Control alternatives via smartphone or tablet

Sony offers an official application, PS Remote Play, which allows a smartphone or tablet to be transformed into a control interface. By connecting your device to your PlayStation Network account, you can:

  • Navigate through the console menus.
  • Launch your games remotely on the same network or via the Internet.
  • Use the virtual buttons on the screen to simulate the controller commands.

This method works well for games requiring few quick reflexes but may be less comfortable for titles requiring precise or rapid actions.

Voice control and smart assistants

The PS4 can also receive certain commands via voice assistants, like Alexa or Google Assistant, when they are paired with the console. You can thus launch applications, start a game, or put the console to sleep simply by speaking.

However, voice control remains limited and does not completely replace the controller for complex in-game actions. It can, however, be combined with other methods for a partially controller-free experience.

Keyboards and mice: an option for certain games

For certain titles, especially FPS or strategy games, it is possible to connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to the PS4. This setup:

  • Offers more precise control for movement and aiming.
  • Can improve performance in some competitive games.
  • Requires the game to support this interface, as not all titles are compatible.

Thus, some players can completely do without the controller for these categories of games.

Specialized accessories for players with reduced mobility

For people with physical limitations, there are adaptive controllers and specific devices that allow playing without using the classic controller. These accessories:

  • Connect directly to the PS4 via USB or Bluetooth.
  • Offer customizable controls according to the user’s needs.
  • Allow playing many titles without the usual manual effort.

These solutions are particularly useful in an accessibility context and are recognized by Sony as part of its PlayStation Accessibility program.

Limits and situations where the controller remains indispensable

Even with all these alternatives, some games still require the controller for an optimal experience:

  • Racing or sports games requiring quick reactions.
  • Titles with complex controls or precise combos.
  • Multiplayer sessions where every millisecond counts.

In these cases, there is no complete substitute for the DualShock 4, but alternative methods can offer an adapted experience for casual use or specific reasons.
