The choice of processor is a determining factor in the overall performance and management of 5G connections in a smartphone. Among mobile chip manufacturers, Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek are the two main players offering widely used 5G solutions. For an informed purchase, it is essential to understand their differences in terms of power, energy consumption, network compatibility, and features.

Raw performance of Snapdragon and MediaTek processors in 5G

Snapdragon processors, notably the 8 Gen series (8 Gen 1, 8 Gen 2), integrate advanced CPU architectures, with high-performance cores and dynamic energy management. They use integrated 5G modems often of the latest generation (example: Snapdragon X65 modem), ensuring high speeds and low latency.

On the other hand, MediaTek offers its Dimensity range, which has quickly advanced with very competitive 5G models. The Dimensity 9000 and 9200 offer CPU and GPU performance close to high-end Snapdragon, also with integrated 5G modems supporting numerous frequency bands and comparable connection speeds.

In benchmarks, Snapdragon often remains slightly ahead in raw power, but MediaTek is closing the gap year after year.

Energy consumption and thermal management in 5G use

Managing energy consumption is crucial, as 5G puts more strain on the processor and modem than previous generations. Snapdragon is known for an optimized architecture that balances power and autonomy well, thanks in particular to advanced 4 nm manufacturing processes and an efficient modem.

MediaTek has also made significant progress in this area, with its latest Dimensity chips manufactured in 4 nm, offering reduced consumption and better thermal management. This results in comparable autonomy, although in some very demanding uses, Snapdragon may have a slight advantage in thermal stability.

5G network compatibility and support for global frequency bands

The modems integrated into SoCs are essential for fully enjoying 5G. Qualcomm offers very comprehensive 5G modems, compatible with a large number of frequency bands, which facilitates connectivity in several regions of the world.

MediaTek also offers versatile modems, covering the main 5G bands, with good support for mmWave frequencies in its most recent models. However, in some cases, Snapdragon is preferred by operators for its better compatibility and network stability.

Multimedia capabilities and integrated technologies

Snapdragon integrates the Adreno GPU, renowned for its graphics performance, particularly in mobile gaming and 3D applications. They also support advanced technologies such as 8K video encoding, HDR capture, and high-fidelity audio solutions (aptX).

MediaTek uses the Mali GPU in its Dimensity chips, which is steadily improving but remains slightly behind Adreno in some graphics benchmarks. MediaTek has also improved its image processing with modern ISPs, allowing for good photo and video performance, often close to Snapdragon.

The choice between the two also depends on regions: some brands favor Snapdragon for their premium models, while others prefer MediaTek to balance costs and performance.
