Your Samsung TV remote control no longer works? Here’s what to do

Votre télécommande Samsung TV ne fonctionne plus

When the remote control of a Samsung television stops working, irritation is immediate. It’s impossible to change channels, access settings, or navigate menus. However, in most cases, it involves simple malfunctions that can be corrected by oneself without necessarily buying a new accessory. This common issue affects both recent models (Smart TV) and older televisions.

Before concluding a definitive failure, several checks can help identify the origin of the problem, whether it is related to power supply, the infrared sensor, desynchronization, or software malfunction.

Remote control power supply: the most common source of failure

In about 1 out of 3 cases, the non-functioning of the Samsung remote control is due to a simple battery problem. Even if they do not seem worn out, partially discharged batteries can weaken the emitted signal, or even prevent any instruction from being sent to the television.

What to do:

  • Replace the batteries with a new set (avoid low-end generic brands).
  • Ensure that the polarity (+ and -) is respected.
  • Never use two batteries of different ages or brands.

Some Samsung remotes, especially the Smart Remote or touch panel models, consume more energy than classic remotes. Their autonomy can be reduced to a few months only, depending on usage.

Detection of infrared or Bluetooth signal: how to know if the remote control works?

Once the batteries are replaced, test if the remote control emits a signal. For this, you can use a smartphone with a camera:

  1. Point the remote control’s LED towards the camera lens (in photo mode, not selfie).
  2. Press a button (Volume, Home, etc.).
  3. If a light flash appears on the screen, it means the remote control emits an infrared signal.

On the other hand, the recent models of Samsung remote controls, especially those provided with Smart TVs, operate in Bluetooth. In this case, no signal is visible via the camera, as the radio technology used is different. For these models, the link between the remote control and the television must be active. A power outage or a software update can break this connection.

Physical obstacles and interferences: often overlooked causes

A piece of furniture, a decorative object, or even a misplaced cable can disrupt communication between the remote control and the television sensor. On classic Samsung televisions, the infrared sensor is generally located under the screen, often in a corner (left or right).

Check:

  • That no object blocks this area.
  • That the line of sight is clear (avoid aiming at an angle or from too far away).
  • That the batteries are not leaking or oxidizing the internal contacts.

On Bluetooth models, such as recent QLED or OLED televisions, the wireless connection is less sensitive to orientation but can be affected by interferences: other Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi congestion, etc.

Samsung remote control reset procedure

If the remote control still seems inactive despite a correct signal and new batteries, a manual reset can correct a software blockage. Here is the standard method:

  1. Remove the batteries.
  2. Press any button and hold it down for 15 seconds.
  3. Release, wait 30 seconds.
  4. Reinsert the batteries, then test again.

If the remote control is a Smart Remote type, it must then be re-paired with the television. To do this:

  • Turn on the television manually.
  • Hold down the Return and Play/Pause buttons for about 5 seconds.
  • A pairing message should appear on the screen.

Use a smartphone as a temporary remote control with SmartThings

If your remote control remains inactive, you can use the SmartThings mobile application, developed by Samsung. It turns your phone into a virtual remote control.

Necessary conditions:

  • The TV must be connected to the Wi-Fi network.
  • The smartphone and the television must share the same network.
  • The device must be compatible (models from 2016 for the most part).

Once installed, the application allows access to the main controls: power on, volume, menu navigation, application launch, virtual keyboard, etc.
