A hacker claims to have gotten hold of sensitive data from more than 6 million Bouygues Telecom subscribers, including even banking information such as the IBAN and BIC code. However, a closer analysis reveals that this attack might well be a deceptive maneuver. Despite the magnitude of the allegations, it turns out that the exposed information is not new and that the hacker is simply bluffing on the dark web.
The 3 key points not to miss
- A hacker claims to hold a database of more than 6 million Bouygues Telecom customers, including personal and banking data.
- The disseminated information is not new and comes from a previous leak that occurred in the summer.
- Although the data is old, the risk of phishing and identity theft for subscribers remains.
The hacker’s claim
On several dark web forums, a hacker claimed to have in his possession a substantial database belonging to Bouygues Telecom. According to him, this database contains the personal and banking information of 6.3 million customers. However, the cybercriminal’s allegations were quickly refuted by cybersecurity experts.
Clément Domingo, an ethical hacker known by the pseudonym SaxX, confirmed that this alleged new leak is actually a re-exploration of data already exposed during an incident earlier in the year.
Sensitive but already known information
The database brandished by the hacker includes details such as the first name, last name, date of birth, postal address, phone number, and email address of subscribers. Additionally, banking information, such as the IBAN and BIC code, is also included.
Although the IBAN is considered relatively harmless when isolated, its association with other personal information can increase risks for users. This is what makes the situation concerning for Bouygues Telecom subscribers, even if the data is not recent.
The risks for subscribers
Despite the fact that this new leak is based on old files, the affected subscribers could still be exposed to phishing attempts or identity theft. Cybercriminals could exploit this information to conduct more targeted attacks.
Bouygues Telecom, although proactive in its innovations for its customers, remains a prime target for hackers, who seek to take advantage of the notoriety of recent large-scale cyberattacks, such as those against the Ministry of the Interior and the CAF.
Context: Bouygues Telecom and cybersecurity
Bouygues Telecom, one of the main telecommunications operators in France, was founded in 1994. The company quickly gained a significant market share thanks to its capacity for innovation and its commitment to its customers. However, like many large companies, Bouygues Telecom regularly faces cybersecurity challenges.
Over the years, the company has had to strengthen its security measures to protect its subscribers’ data in the face of rising cyber threats. The recent incident demonstrates that despite the efforts made, the telecommunications sector remains under constant threat from hackers seeking to exploit any possible vulnerability.
