Unable to send a GIF via SMS on iPhone? Enable this hidden option in Messages

Impossible d’envoyer un GIF par SMS sur iPhone

On iPhone, it sometimes happens that it is impossible to send a GIF via the Messages app, even when the connection is good and the file seems correctly selected. This blockage, often frustrating, does not necessarily result from a bug. In most cases, it is linked to a function disabled by default in the system settings or an incomplete configuration of the Messages app.

Fortunately, a quick change in the settings is enough to unblock the sending of GIFs, whether in an iMessage conversation or a regular SMS.

Check for the presence of the “#images” option in the Messages app

The iOS Messages app includes a function dedicated to sending GIFs, named #images. This option allows access to a library of animated content directly from the chat toolbar. However, it can disappear without apparent reason or never activate automatically, especially if the iPhone was set up in a region where this function is not yet enabled by default.

To check its presence:

  • Open a conversation in the Messages app
  • Swipe the icon bar at the bottom of the screen
  • Look for the “#images” icon with a magnifying glass

If it is absent, this is often where the problem lies.

Re-enable GIF sending via Messages settings

When the #images tool does not appear, it is possible to add it manually from the Messages app extensions.

Here is the procedure:

  1. Open a conversation in Messages
  2. Swipe the toolbar to the left until the “+” button
  3. Tap “Store” or “More extensions”
  4. Search for “#images” in the list of available extensions
  5. Activate it by pressing “Add”

Once this step is completed, the #images icon reappears in your conversations, allowing you to send GIFs again from the integrated iOS database.

Activate iMessage to unlock certain visual functions

If the #images option remains missing despite the previous manipulations, it is important to check if iMessage is activated. Some integrated tools, including sending animated GIFs from the Apple library, require the iMessage service to function properly.

To check this point:

  • Go to Settings > Messages
  • Make sure the iMessage button is activated
  • Also check that your phone number or email address is associated

In some cases, a simple disconnection/reconnection of iMessage can restore the missing features.

Change the phone region to unlock #images

If despite all the checks, #images still does not appear, it is possible that the region associated with your iPhone is the cause of the problem. Indeed, Apple does not offer this function in all countries. To unlock it, simply temporarily change the region of your device.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Language & Region
  2. Select a region like United States, where the option is always active
  3. Restart the Messages app
  4. Return to a conversation: #images should now appear

Once the tool is activated, you can revert to the original region without losing access to the function.

GIFs still blocked? Check content restrictions

By default, some options related to adult content or animations may be disabled in the restriction settings. This can prevent the display or sending of GIFs.

To check them:

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy
  • Enter your Screen Time passcode
  • Go to Allowed Content > Web Content
  • Select “Unrestricted Access”

This setting ensures that no restriction blocks the #images extension or the viewing of GIFs.
