Why is there a lock on my PS5 games?

Pourquoi il y a un cadenas sur mes jeux PS5

The padlock icon visible on certain PS5 games means that access to the content is temporarily restricted. Unlike a system error, this symbol indicates that the game’s digital license is not recognized or is no longer valid for the currently used profile. It is not a hardware failure, but rather a protection mechanism against unauthorized access. This issue is common and, in most cases, easy to resolve if the cause is correctly identified.

Game installed with another PlayStation account

The most common reason for this restriction comes from a mismatch between the account that purchased the game and the currently connected account. When a game has been acquired from another user profile, the PS5 automatically blocks access if this profile is not recognized as the console’s primary account.

This can happen, for example, if you share your console with someone close or if you use multiple accounts (by country or for purchases abroad). The padlock then prevents other users from freely accessing a game they did not purchase themselves.

Solution:

  • Log in with the account that purchased the game.
  • Enable “Console Sharing and Offline Play” in the PS5 settings (Users and Accounts section).
  • Ensure that the primary account is authorized on the console. If not, access to games will be limited to secondary profiles.

Expired PlayStation Plus subscription

Another very common situation: you downloaded a game via the PlayStation Plus subscription, but it has expired. Once the subscription expires, all games offered through this service become inaccessible, although they remain installed on your console.

This applies to both PS5 and PS4 games offered for free each month, as well as those obtained through the PS Plus Extra or Premium catalog.

Solution:

  • Check if your subscription is still active.
  • If necessary, renew your subscription to reactivate access rights.
  • Once payment is validated, the padlock disappears automatically without needing to reinstall the game.

Console offline or license verification issue

In certain situations, especially after a system update or a long period without an internet connection, the console can no longer validate the digital licenses of the games. This can trigger the appearance of the padlock, even if you are indeed the owner of the game.

A temporary interruption of the PlayStation Network or a disruption of your own connection can be enough to disturb this process.

Solution:

  • Connect your PS5 to the internet.
  • Restart the console after connecting.
  • Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses to force recognition of installed games.

This type of verification is risk-free and does not result in any data deletion.

Game installed from a different or borrowed disc

If you installed a game from a physical disc that is no longer inserted, the console blocks access because the presence of the disc is necessary to authenticate the license.

Similarly, if you installed a game from a friend’s disc or via a temporary loan, you will not be able to relaunch it without reinserting that same disc.

Solution:

  • Insert the disc used during installation.
  • If you no longer have access to the disc, the only alternative is to purchase a digital version of the game from the PlayStation Store.

Regional restrictions or unauthorized sharing

In rare cases, the padlock may appear due to geographical restrictions. For example, if a game was purchased from an account set to a different region than your console or current account, the license may be blocked.

Account sharing between regions or between friends via unofficial methods can also cause this type of blockage. Sony regularly monitors these practices to prevent abusive circumventions.
