When the light bar on the PS4 controller flashes orange, it usually indicates that the controller is not completely turned off. This behavior often occurs when the console enters rest mode. In this mode, the controller remains connected briefly and then enters a low power state. The orange flashing serves to indicate that the connection is being suspended.
This flashing can also be observed when the controller is plugged in but the console does not provide enough current for fast charging. It is therefore sometimes a case of slow or suspended charging. In this case, the light flashes rhythmically for a few seconds before turning off, showing that the battery is receiving current, but not always enough for optimal charging.
Console in standby: the controller continues to communicate
The PS4 has a standby mode that allows certain activities to continue in the background, such as downloads or controller charging. If the controller is plugged in while the console is in standby, the light flashes orange to indicate the connection to a PS4 that is not fully active.
This behavior is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. It simply means that the console is not completely shut down and that the controller is awaiting instructions, or in a slow charging phase.
This flashing may also appear for a few seconds when the controller is plugged into a wall charger, a computer USB port, or any other device that does not deliver the exact current intended for the controller. The orange color continues to light up briefly while the controller detects a potential power source or confirms standby mode.
Micro-disconnection or very low battery: beware of prolonged intermittence
If the orange light continues to flash irregularly, it may indicate a battery or connection problem. A very low or worn-out battery can cause this kind of behavior: the controller attempts to charge but interrupts the process due to unstable or insufficient current. The visible consequence is erratic flashing, sometimes accompanied by connection drops during gameplay.
This signal can also appear if the cable used to charge the controller is damaged or unsuitable, or if the USB port used has a loose connection. The current is then transmitted intermittently, preventing full charge. The controller repeatedly attempts to restart the charging process, creating this irregular interval flashing.
It is important to check if the orange light stays on continuously (which indicates charging is in progress), or if it flashes (which indicates temporary activity, often a connection being suspended).
Software issue or system bug: an unexpected reaction
In some cases, a persistent or unusual orange flashing can be caused by a software issue. An interrupted system update, a power outage during use, or an abrupt disconnection of the console can lead to bugs in power management or synchronization between the controller and the PS4.
When this happens, the controller may remain stuck in a state of transition between two modes: neither fully connected nor completely disconnected. Result: the orange light flashes for no apparent reason, and it may be necessary to reset the controller or restart the console to resolve the issue.
Some users also report that this behavior appears after using their controller on another device (such as a PC or smartphone via Bluetooth) without properly disconnecting it from the previous connection. In this case, the controller tries to reconnect to the console without success, leading to this prolonged flashing without response to buttons.
